You're right, Mary, I can't wait for the new CD either! They played a bunch of new songs all three sets, and if those are the ones on the CD, we're in for a treat! The fiddler from Solas joined them on a few numbers on Saturday and Sunday and sounded terrific, and one of my favorite folk bands, Schooner Fare, joined them on Sunday. "The Lightkeeper" was probably the best new song I heard all weekend, and Rory's solo of "Bright Eyed Girl from Keady" is probably the first time I've ever heard that song live, including from its original author Tommy Makem. Here are the setlists because yes, I wrote them all down. Not that I'm a fanatic or anything :-) Many of the songs I hadn't heard before, so the titles may be off.

The More They Want To Marry
The Jolly Waggoner
To Welcome Poor Paddy Home
It's Been a Very Hard Year
Kitty from Baltimore
Haul Away for Rosie
He Wouldn't Dance
"These were the hounds (sp?) that could find (?) him" (song about noble landlords)
The Lightkeeper
I Bid You Goodnight

Saturday
Outlaw Rapparee
Never Get Their Man
Gypsy Rover
The Jolly Beggar
Lord Nelson
Road to Gundagai
Goodbye to the 30-Foot Trailer
Bright Eyed Girl from Keady (Rory solo)

We were high and dry (in an exhibit tent viewing--ironically-- the Titanic display) when that Friday night deluge burst. And it never really stopped raining after that. But what's a little wet booty when there's great music on the schedule?

Being as much of Friday's crowd gets free admission, many folks gave it up as night fell, and the entire grounds became somewhat sparse. For Irish Fest. There were still plenty of people, but it wasn't elbow-to-abdomen. Luckily, the lightning moved east over the lake, and cords and amps were good to go. Saturday's M&S show saw a brief bout of rain as well, and Sunday brought clear skies and hot breezes. Both the latter shows were big draws.

I held off posting a review as I'm not particularly detail-oriented; I miss the posters from other years who could recall entire setlists. But I will say this: Holy Bouzouki, I cannot WAIT for the new CD! They played a number of selections from it, all very powerful and nicely arranged. Since their last studio release, they've really, and I mean really, coalesced as a band-- know their strengths, and know their... even better strengths. Know how to use them. Know how to pull back from a solo ballad so delicately it aches with unstated emotion; know how to build to that knockout moment of five solid voices lunging for the kill moments later. Know how to re-tune a guitar so quickly while Conner or Shane winds up for a punchline that you don't even notice. Oh, wait... that won't be on the CD...

Loved the version of "Barrett's Privateers" with Schooner Fare joining onstage. I really hope that's on the CD. They do the most bone-chilling rendition of it I've ever been able to find. With no disrespect to Stan Rogers.

Siobhan, were you able to catch the Sunday version of the tribute set? I loved that it wasn't the same show at all. Saturday's set was hosted by Evans & Doherty, and Sunday's by Robbie O' Connell and Seamus Kennedy. I didn't know what to expect before either one, but each was brilliant. Not tightly rehearsed and scripted, and so all the more emotional and magical and musically amazing because of it. Tribute was made to The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, as well as to Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy respectively as solo artists. Performers included the McPeake family (wonderful to see the extra honor shown Francis McPeake III!), Tommy Sands and family, Eugene Byrne, Danny Doyle, Slide (who were really wonderful and I'm sorry I missed them at their own stage), Tom Sweeney... and more; I'd be grateful if someone could add any I've missed.

Met up with my cousin at the tributes; she is a big Liam Clancy fan. And I realized she wasn't aware that he had passed. Couldn't believe we hadn't had that phone conversation over the past year. The tribute performances were very deeply felt, and very appreciated.

My young teen daughter was lucky enough to meet Tommy Makem a few times after performances, here and at ICHC. She's had the Makem & Spain Brothers sign all their CDs at past fests. When we ran out of new ones to buy, she bought a white T-shirt and had them sign that last time we saw them. On Sunday after the show-- even though the humid heat had finally gotten to her-- she roused herself and ran about the nearest merch tents looking for something signable, but we couldn't find anything appropriate. It was pretty amusing. ("This used food wrapper? No?" ) She'd been waiting all day for a good seat for Gaelic Storm and did get one, but she mostly talked about the M&SBros. on the long ride home in the wee hours. We'll both be looking forward to that new CD.

One more thing: if you're on Facebook, then you've probably already seen the backstage photos the Makem&Spains posted. There are also plenty more pics of the whole festival, all four days of it, by "Milwaukee Irish Fest." Lots of fun.

I Am the Mountainy Singer

I AM the mountainy singer?
The voice of the peasant's dream,
The cry of the wind on the wooded hill,
The leap of the fish in the stream.

Quiet and love I sing?
The carn on the mountain crest,
The cailin in her lover's arms,
The child at its mother's breast.

Beauty and peace I sing?
The fire on the open hearth,
The cailleach spinning at her wheel,
The plough in the broken earth.

Travail and pain I sing?
The bride on the childing bed,
The dark man laboring at his rhymes,
The ewe in the lambing shed.

Sorrow and death I sing?
The canker come on the corn,
The fisher lost in the mountain loch,
The cry at the mouth of morn.

No other life I sing,
For I am sprung of the stock
That broke the hilly land for bread,
And built the nest in the rock!

I would agree that CBTM came a long way from their early recordings. The only one I really don't care for is "Spontaneous Performance". You can tell that they weren't having a great performing day, and some of it sounds kind of rough. However, I feel their earlier output was far superior to their later 60's albums. Sometimes they sound a little bit too polished and over produced for me. I really like the simplicity of "Boys Won't Leave the Girls Alone" and "First Hurrah".

Anyway, over the years I managed to find copies of both early Makem Bros. cd's. I do like "On The Rocks" as well. It has some great tracks on it, and it's a shame the boys let it go out of print. Nobody mentioned the great "Straw Into Gold" duet with Conor and Cathie Ryan. I really don't care too much for the "Out Standing" cd. I think the demo tape did them more justice. Would love to see those demo tape tracks as bonus tracks someday on a cd!! Or perhaps a special EP available only at concerts??!! Hint Hint!!;)

Can't wait to hear the new cd! Can't wait to see them again in Pittsburgh either!!

If you remember, the early CBTM recordings weren't as polished as the later ones either. Doesn't make them any less enjoyable! I love OSIAF...although I'll admit part of that comes from remembering Shane doing "Sea Faring Men" at Gaelic Park and all three on "Mr. Dunderbat" at St. Xavier's (also in Chicago). But OSIAF and On the Rocks are both good listening and well-worth tracking down. Have never heard Shane do "Love Is Kind", but I sure would like to! I've been sorry I never got around to writing with suggestions for the new CD--but I'm looking forward to its release. Also looking forward to seeing the fellas in Milwaukee next month!

The family of Mr. Gerald V. Conlon announced his passing on Tuesday, July 6, 2010. Gerry was pre-deceased by his wife of forty-four years - Eileen - just over a year ago. Gerry and Eileen were regulars on the Makem trips to Ireland for many years and more recently on the winter cruises.

We all remember his dry humor, his tales of being a fireman in the Bronx, and his vast knowledge of historical events.

Gerry is survived by three sons, five grandchildren, one brother, and his sister-in-law Dr. Elizabeth (Betty) Conlon, who also travelled with many of us through Ireland.

A Funeral Mass was offered at St. Columba R.C. Church in Chester, NY on July 10.

A number of friends have left their thoughts and memories of Gerry on www.flynnfh.com under "Light a Candle".

Most of their selections were from the forthcoming album, but they also played two of Tommy's (Red is the Rose, and Lord Nelson), and one of Conor's (When we danced in Donegal).

Conor's attempt to get the audience to sing a line in one number which required perfect timing on their part showed a lot of patience, but will require more directions.
Rory ended the session with what sounded like an old-fashioned country revival song - Goodnight, Goodnight, Goodnight!.

There's a concept with which I'd like to acquaint these people: It's called...FUN.

But in all seriousness, the article gets it right. No one would expect sober sean-nos singing from the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, and no one would expect whoops and whistles and renditions of "Johnson's Motor Car" from people who actually use the word "medium" without a tongue-in-cheek.

Besides, CBTM knew how to do justice to their serious songs. Tommy didn't solicit clap-alongs to "Four Green Fields," did he?

After some of the reviews about how they weren't quite as polished then, I was expecting less. But this is a solid recording. "Bonnie Blue Bonnets" is a particular standout, and I like their take on "Hot Asphalt." Peggy, you're right, Shane really does sound like a young Tommy on his "Dark Eyed Molly" solo, a recording almost as good as that of Stan Rogers. All in all, the band is undoubtedly much better now, but this is far from a bad album; I found it very enjoyable.

From The Archives: July 15th, 1964

Charles Acton, The Irish Times long-time music critic, found himself at odds with some friends over his approval of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, prompting him to explain himself in this column. ? JOE JOYCE

LAST AUGUST I wrote an enthusiastic notice of the first Irish concert given by the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, and as a result nearly alienated two sets of friends.

One came to the second concert on my recommendation, told me in the interval they were deeply disappointed and had rarely witnessed such an exhibition of American-style vulgarity, and they did not wait for the second half. The other pair objected strongly to the noise and nicknamed them the ?Folk-Beatles?.

The head of the first family is a distinguished scholar of Irish. I would be extremely surprised to find him singing ballads in English (or any other language) in a pub. It was no surprise to me that he had never heard of Johnson?s Motor Car before that night. I think they expected a more earnest evening of sean-n?s singing ?through the medium?, in spite of my notice plainly discussing something quite different.

Now I remain an unrepentant admirer of the work of the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. And I am quite sure that both sets of friends came expecting to hear something quite different from what they got. But one has to judge the Clancys for what they are and not regret that they are not something else.

To many people ?our glorious heritage of traditional song? means a John McCormack singing Thomas Moore?s Oft in the Stilly Night . Anything more different from that than the Clancys would be hard to find, still using words and tunes actually found in this island. Without discussing McCormack or Moore, neither is really ?our glorious heritage of traditional song?. Nor, for the matter of that, would the Clancy Brothers want to be that either.

To many others, folk song and traditional music mean sean-n?s. So it does to me, and I would be the first to protest if the Clancy Brothers put, say, An r?ibh t? ag an gCarraig through their particular mill. But they do not. It is clear from the records in the catalogue of Tradition Records Inc., founded and owned by Pat Clancy, that they know very well indeed the difference between The Holy Ground and An r?ibh t? .

There is a continuous spectrum running through the vestiges of high bardic art in An r?ibh t? , the true Irish folk song (in its original English meaning) of D?irin De , the foreign song assimilated as S?an ?ac Donnchadha?s version of The Bonny Boy, the ideal translation of these into urban art as done by Gr?inne Yeats and Mary O?Hara.

This continuum has nothing to do with the Clancy Brothers. For it has nothing to do with the urban street ballad, the pub song, the political ballad, the songs of the ports, with folk song in the American sense. And that is just what these singers are concerned with.
